A practical cleanout timeline before you move

Decide uncertain items early, remove bulky pieces before the final week, and leave daily-use rooms until packing is nearly complete.

Work backward from the date the property must be empty, then build in a buffer. Disposal plans fall apart when every uncertain item reaches the final day at once.

Four to six weeks before the move: decide the slow items

Start with things that need another person’s answer: furniture a family member may want, donations that require acceptance, old appliances tied to a replacement delivery, and items stored off-site. Set a deadline for each decision.

  • Photograph items offered to family and request a yes-or-no answer by a specific date.
  • Ask donation organizations what they accept and whether pickup is available.
  • Check retailer or utility options for refrigerators and freezers.
  • Separate documents, photos, medication and valuables before anyone else handles the room.
  • Identify paint, chemicals, batteries and fuel for an approved hazardous-waste route.

Two to three weeks before: remove bulky pieces

This is a good window for furniture that will not move with you, broken shelving, spare mattresses and garage overflow. Early removal opens working space for packing and reveals repairs or cleaning that were hidden behind large items.

Measure the route and tell the removal company about stairs, tight turns, gates and parking. NIOSH’s lifting guidance treats weight, hand position, travel distance, body rotation and grip as separate risk factors. Leave heavy carrying to people with the right plan and equipment. See the NIOSH lifting-equation overview (accessed September 18, 2026).

Seven to ten days before: clear the nonessential rooms

Finish the garage, guest room, basement and storage areas. Each room should end in one of three states: packed for the move, empty and clean, or waiting for a confirmed pickup.

Room statusWhat it means
PackedBoxes are labeled for the destination and do not block the exit path.
ClearedClosets, shelves and drawers have been checked and the room is ready to clean.
ScheduledRemoval items are listed, accepted and assigned to a confirmed appointment.

Avoid placing large items at the curb while they wait. Farragut lists furniture, wood and other large curbside items among potential garbage, junk and litter violations outside an appropriate pickup day. Review the Town of Farragut guidance (accessed September 18, 2026).

Two to three days before handoff: do the final sweep

  1. Check every cabinet, attic hatch, crawlspace access, outdoor storage box and appliance compartment.
  2. Compare the remaining removal pile with the approved item list.
  3. Call about anything added after the estimate.
  4. Keep cleaning supplies you still need separate from the load.
  5. Leave a clear route for movers, cleaners and the removal crew.
  6. Confirm keys, remotes, manuals and fixtures that stay with the property.
Keep one small “last day” kit.

Set aside basic cleaning supplies, paper goods, device chargers, medication, pet supplies, water and the documents needed for the move. Put the kit in your vehicle or a clearly protected location.

Choose timing based on the job

Schedule bulky removal earlier when the items block packing or cleaning. Schedule the final load later when it includes small leftovers that will only become clear after packing. If you need both, ask whether two visits or one larger final pickup makes more sense.

Do not plan around unconfirmed same-day availability. Call as soon as the item list is stable enough for an estimate, then leave room for access changes, added items or a separate hazardous-waste trip.
