What can go in a residential junk removal load?

Start with three groups: ordinary household items, items that need confirmation, and materials that belong at an approved facility. This keeps hazardous products out of the load and gives the removal company enough information to assess the rest.

Use this table before making the item list

The first row is still subject to review. Wet, contaminated, infested, attached or unusually heavy items may need different planning. Do not add unlisted items after the estimate without telling the crew.

Keep household hazardous waste separate

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies products that can ignite, react, explode, corrode or cause toxicity as household hazardous waste. Its examples include paints, cleaners, oils, batteries and pesticides. EPA says not to pour these products on the ground, into storm drains or down household drains, and advises residents to check with their local solid-waste agency. Farragut’s official garbage and recycling page sends residents to the Solid Waste Management Facility for household hazardous waste and lists Dutchtown Convenience Center for recycling and trash services. Do not treat the curb as a holding area

Farragut’s garbage, junk and litter page lists large items placed at the curb, including furniture and wood, among potential violations outside an appropriate trash pickup day. The same page also lists household appliances, furniture, building materials, brush and wood in its definition of junk. If you are comparing a private pickup with a self-service option, check the destination first. Ask what it accepts, whether proof of residency is required, how the load should be separated and whether fees apply. A full-service removal company may be more useful when items are inside the home, the route includes stairs or you do not have a suitable vehicle.

Build a useful item list

1. Walk one room at a time and group identical items.
2. Photograph or measure the largest pieces for your own notes.
3. Flag refrigerators, freezers, electronics, tires, mattresses and dense debris.
4. Put chemicals, fuel, batteries and compressed-gas cylinders on a separate list.
5. Note stairs, narrow doors, gates, elevators and long carries.
6. Ask the company to confirm the entire list before pickup day.

You do not need to know the final disposal route for every ordinary household item before calling. You do need to disclose the full list and keep hazardous products out of the general pile.
